KOEL Kid: Chloe Ehrlich

Chloe Ehrlich, or better known as Miss Blair, started down the design path creating wedding invites, place cards, welcome signs and the likes. While gathering inspiration for her next design, she stumbled upon a macramé wedding backdrop and felt an immediate pull towards the craft. That was where Chloe’s macramé adventure began, and we believe it’s not ending anytime soon! Take a peek into Chloe’s macramé ventures through the interview below.

1. Tell us more about your background and what led you to choosing macramé as a craft?
I have always had a passion for art and design. I’m constantly drawing, painting and creating everything I could. I graduated in 2014 with a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design and have been designing ever since. I first started on wedding design – creating invites, place cards, welcome signs, thank you cards, the list goes on. While I was gathering inspiration, I stumbled across a macramé wedding backdrop on Pinterest and I was immediately hooked! I wanted to be a part of this amazing macramé world that I had obviously been missing out on, and that’s where my macramé adventure began.

2. What makes you a KOEL Kid?
As the macramé trend continues to grow, it is important to incorporate unique and modern styles to your design, while letting your creative voice through your creations. With my love for country style and rustic decor, I have included this into my wall art. Using faux cow skulls to hang macramé cords and earthy tones to reflect the Country Boho image, I’m making sure a part of me is seen through my designs. I am so honoured to be call myself a KOEL Kid amongst other amazing artists that have all discovered their unique style and what makes them stand out from the rest.

3. Share with us the creative process behind each of your projects.
When I start off a new design, I first envision where it might be displayed, then the overall shape, and lastly filling in the pattern. I love creating a design twice because I’m always adding things, taking things out and changing things up the second time round. To me, that’s the fun part about macramé.

4. Pick one of your favourite designs and answer these quick questions:

The inspiration behind this design is… This piece was one of the first designs I created. I was testing out some new rope and just started knotting, only to realise I had created something pretty awesome! I love the size and the fluffiness of it, and how it suits any home interior. I use the darkest wooden stick I could find and add a brown agate slice in the centre to accentuate my individual style. This piece is now my most re-created wall hanging!

The dream store in which I would like to stock this design is… I can’t think of a store that would be the perfect space to display my design, and that’s exactly what excites me! One day, I would like to have my own store selling macramé pieces and other home decor items that truly represents the Country Boho feel.

Which celebrity house can you picture your design at… Elsa Pataky, she’s got some serious style.

If this design made it big, I would… Make it in every colour possible!

If this design could talk, it would say… “I’m small but fierce”

5. Great things take time, so how much has changed since you first started macramé and where do you see it in the next five years?
I have been doing this for a little over a year now and already I have seen it evolve in so many ways; from the original wall hangings I used to do to replicating the natural environment within my knotted leaves and flowers. I have started to mix different mediums by adding hand-painted designs to my cow skulls. The possibilities are endless, and that’s what I love about this craft. There are no rules!
