After seeing glimpses of Erin’s home on Instagram, we approached the blogger at Francois et Moi for more images of the beautiful space she lives in. Generously, Erin got back to us with these gorgeous shots! Like her, her home is equally  cheery and welcoming.. we get to know a little more about her and her home in a short interview.. read on!

Bloesem Team: Could you tell us more about your beautiful home?

Erin: My home is actually a duplex! My husband, Ken, and I purchased our 1934 Tudor-style duplex (our first home) in July of last year and spent much of the Fall months renovating both kitchens and making general improvements to the home. We moved in later that Fall and began renting out the upstairs income suite shortly after.

BT: What interior style do you like to go for?

E: I’d describe my aesthetic as “handmade modern.” I’m inspired by visually clean, modern spaces that have been softened by traditional architectural elements and handmade pieces. I’m drawn towards bright, modern spaces, but still want our home to feel approachable and “unstyled.” Using a mélange of handcrafted and vintage pieces really help to reinforce the relaxed and casual vibe. The palette of luxe neutrals with hints of indigo play a unifying role throughout the home.

BT: What’s the most interesting piece of furniture in your home and what’s its backstory?

E: Our tv stand is a 1950’s train cart that was once used on an assembly line at a furniture manufacturer in Highpoint, NC. The wheels are cast iron, and it weighs a ton! I picked it up heavily discounted at a designer swap meet several years ago, and over the years it’s served many functions in our home including a coffee table, bench, and most recently a media stand.

BT: Where do you find inspiration to come up the creative DIY ideas?

I love scouring Scandinavian design blogs for simplistic furniture and accessories that aren’t available to us in the US, and putting my spin on a handmade version for my own home.

BT: What’s your favourite material to work with?

E: My favorite material to work with is indigo dye. The dye process is always a bit of a surprise in the end because you never know exactly how a fabric is going to accept the dye or how a resist technique is going to take. It’s a challenge I thrive on!
