If you think that TASSELS are just ancient ornaments on hems of royal garments or a series of threads wound around a cord hanging beside your curtains… You might have just missed out on the latest trend around! These embellishments that date back to the ancient times are making a HUGE comeback in both the fashion and interior industry. From dresses to necklaces and even earrings, many of this year’s coolest fashion pieces have some sort of tassel action happening, offering any outfit a splash of elegance, a tint of flirtation, or just a quick bit of colour. Home decor is also not far behind… Tassels are appearing on furniture of modern homes as chic and artful accents to lamps, pillows, table runners and much more!
Join in the trend and learn from Morrison Polkinghorne the art of tassel making. He will teach you the traditional techniques to make intricate tassels but with contemporary and bright coloured strings to make them a real pop on your body or in your home! Once you have mastered these techniques of tassel making, it will allow you to make a tassel fringe or a multi-key tassel in no time which you can use as accents in your future design projects.
Morrison Polkinghorne is Australia’s most Internationally renowned textile expert. His business Passementeries, specializes in hand-crafted 8th century French-style fine tassels and trims, ornamental ropes and bullion fringe for discerning clients, national trust and heritage homes, and for heirloom restoration. Each item leaving his small workshop shows the same attention to detail, a precision, demonstrated only in hand-crafted work by skilled artisans. Morrison is also the director of Globetrotting Gourmet and co-author of “The Burma Cookbook”. Together with his partner Robert Carmack, they organize and host culinary tours to Southeast Asia.
It will be 3 hours of tassel making fun accompanied with delicious food and drinks! The workshop will cover traditional techniques to making tassels which include rope making, quick and simple knot tying, as well as some easy ways to embellish your tassels. With just a few twists and turns, Morrison will guide you through making your very own simple key tassels. He will then teach you more advanced designs such as the blind tassel where you will learn to decorate the head of your tassel with a detached buttonhole stitch and tie a lattice over the skirt. All the materials needed for the class will be included as well, and are all yours to take home to continue the tassel fun. You will be amazed at the number of different tassels you will be able to create, because we are too!
